G'day all, I have recently checked my Tripod web site and discovered a lot of dead-links that need fixing. Seeing as I have a little time to attend to some 'housekeeping', I'll get on with it.
I intend to make 'The Ute Project' available for download. . . free bandwidth allowing, and add some updates to this file. It will probably be in 'Word' format.
Also, housekeeping will eliminate a lot of the existing posts, no loss here I think. You all have the links and we don't lose much data. It's necessary to keep traffic within limits.
I'm up for a FULL rebuild of the Ute's front end. I've been collecting new parts for several months and it will be a suitable finale to that (Project) thread. At present, the thread reads over 24 Mb uncompressed. I can add that again with new posts so, the download will be largish. Broadband will allow a quick transfer. . . no more than a sultry skin-flick worth of data.
See how I go over the next few weeks. I may even get a few field reports in and some detecting.

just an update: I didn't make it to Ora Banda because I was elbow-deep in rebuilding the front end. I've changed a few links on my web-site to active pages or deleted the links. Expediancy.
I have a Suzuki Sierra to play with. It's a bit of a mongrel, but an interesting toy. I have taken a few pix but that's all about getting parts. I'm nearly 'there' with getting it going, but problems still stick their head up. My last was fixing a broken engine mount. The Kal Earthquake has slowed me down.
I can't go to town until things are open again in Boulder.
Note: this little suzy has been crammed full with a Dat. 200B engine. Not my choice, but I need it going to save my Ute from dammage around rough and sometimes boggy station tracks.
I took a test drive yesterday. I had to collect some oil and coolant for the operation up here. I asked our mechanic to take the beastie for a test drive and he returned a view that something was wrong. It turns out that both engine mounting were off the plates.
More work for me. It's a nice little ute with 4x4 an Hi/Lo range.
Still working on it and todays persistant rain will keep me in camp a while longer.

Heard you did a little shaking during the earthquake.
An interesting experience isnt it?

yup! I can see how people drop-dead from fright. The initial BANG is very loud and the reverbrations seem to go on and on for a long time. These are girl thingy quakes compared to others. They are big enough for me though. daza

Hi Daza,
Didn't make Ora Banda also. Did the gearbox in on my Troopy while up in the Gascoyne & had to drive 1000ks home in 4th gear. Dropped the box & recond'd it - now running OK. Hope to get back up there as I found a patch that looks very promising.
Cheers

A magnatude 5 quake is enough to give a person a start if you are close to the epicenter. In California and Nevada where I am from they are not as unusual. I've experienced probably 30 quakes of a 5 magnetude, maybe 10 of a size 6 and one 7+. (each number is 10 times more powerful than the last) You get to where you quickly recognise whats happening, but one never gets used them. A while back we had a swarm many dozens of them centered near where I live on the west side of Reno, Nevada. www.seismo.unr.edu/feature/2008/mogul.htmlI hope you dont experience any more. Chris

Another tonight Chris. It was 2.7. There have been several very close to the biggie (5.0) a total of seven in around one week. See my post on finders for the epi-center charts. I hope its not the build-up to a monster. Here's the geo site address: www.ga.gov.au/bin/listQuakesdaza

I'm guessing its just aftershocks, getting smaller and fewer as time goes on.
